AU Sounds Alarm Over Mali’s Spiraling Security Collapse

(MENAFN) African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf issued an urgent alarm Sunday regarding Mali's spiraling security collapse, as terrorist organizations enforce devastating sieges that have choked off vital supply routes and plunged civilians into dire humanitarian straits.

In an official statement, Youssouf denounced the lethal assaults that have claimed innocent lives and intensified chaos throughout impacted territories.

Pledging unwavering support to Mali's government and citizens, Youssouf emphasized the African Union's steadfast dedication to advancing peace, security and prosperity throughout the Sahel region.

He additionally delivered sharp criticism of recent kidnapping incidents, notably the seizure of three Egyptian citizens, demanding their swift and unconditional freedom.

These actions, he declared, represent serious breaches of human rights protections and international humanitarian standards.

Youssouf urged a "robust, coordinated and coherent international response to counter terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel."

He further advocated for strengthened collaboration, intelligence exchange and continuous assistance to vulnerable nations across the area.

He confirmed the African Union's complete preparedness to aid Mali and neighboring Sahel states in their pursuit of peace and stability.

The surging violence perpetrated by militants affiliated with ISIS (Daesh) throughout Mali has compelled authorities to close educational institutions at all levels amid converging power, humanitarian and security emergencies.

Responding to the mounting dangers, the US, UK and France have issued evacuation advisories to their citizens currently in Mali and issued stern warnings against traveling to the West African country.
